Richard B. Brewer
President and Chief Executive Officer
Richard B. Brewer has more than 30 years of experience in the biotechnology industry, developing and commercializing drugs for major unmet medical needs, particularly in heart disease. Prior to joining ARCA, Mr. Brewer was managing partner of Crest Asset Management, providing guidance to and investing in biotechnology opportunities.
Before that, Mr. Brewer was president and CEO of Scios, Inc., where he led the successful approval and launch of Natrecor® (nesiritide), the first new drug for acute heart failure in more than a decade, and guided Scios through a $2.4 billion merger with Johnson and Johnson.
Before Scios, Brewer served as chief operating officer of Heartport, a cardiovascular device company developing minimally invasive approaches to major heart surgery. Prior to that, he spent over a decade at Genentech in various management positions, including senior vice president of sales and marketing and senior vice president of Genentech Europe and Canada.
Mr. Brewer holds a B.S. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and an M.B.A. from Northwestern University.
Michael R. Bristow, MD, Ph.D.
Chairman
Dr. Bristow’s principal focus is on ARCA’s clinical programs and FDA approval, and on ARCA’s later stage drug development and in-licensing programs. Dr. Bristow is Professor of Medicine and former Head of Cardiology, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Bristow is also the Co-Director of the Colorado Cardiovascular Institute. He is the author of over 350 reviewed papers and chapters on heart failure/cardiomyopathy and other cardiovascular diseases, and is responsible for key breakthroughs in heart disease treatment, including the introduction of beta-blockers and the discovery of key molecular mechanisms underlying heart failure.
Dr. Bristow is the principal founder, a director, and former CSMO of Myogen, Inc. (NASDAQ: MYOG), Westminster, Colorado.
Francis J. Bullock, Ph.D.
Dr. Bullock has served as a member of our Board of Directors since March 2005. From 2002 to 2003, Dr. Bullock was a Senior Advisor for the Strategic Decisions Group, a management consulting firm.
From 1993 to 2002, Dr. Bullock was a Senior Consultant at Arthur D. Little, Inc., concentrating on pharmaceutical and biotechnology R&D, as well as the fine chemicals and agricultural chemicals industries.
From 1981 to 1993, Dr. Bullock served as the Senior Vice President, Research Operations at Schering Plough Research Institute. Dr. Bullock serves on the Board of Directors for Atherex and GTC Biotherapeutics.
Dr. Bullock received a B.S. in pharmacy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, an A.M. in organic chemistry from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Harvard University.
J. William Freytag, Ph.D.
Dr. Freytag is currently serving as Senior Advisor with Gilead Sciences following the merger of his former company, Myogen, Inc. with Gilead. From July 1998 until the merger in November 2006, Dr. Freytag was President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Myogen. From October 1994 to May 1998, Dr. Freytag was a Senior Vice President at Somatogen, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company, where he was responsible for corporate and commercial development. Prior to Somatogen, he was President of Research and Development at Boehringer Mannheim Corporation, an international healthcare company, from May 1990 to September 1994. Previously, Dr. Freytag spent ten years with DuPont in various research and business positions in the Medical Products Department. Dr. Freytag is a member of the Board of Directors of Immunicon Corporation. Dr. Freytag is also a member of the Executive Board for the Colorado Biotechnology Association.
Dr. Freytag received a B.S. from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Jean-François Formela, MD
Senior Partner, Atlas Venture
Jean-François Formela has served as a member of our Board of Directors since February 2006. Jean-François Formela is a Senior Partner and joined Atlas Venture in 1993 to help build the US life sciences franchise.
Previously, he was Senior Director, Medical Marketing and Scientific Affairs at Schering-Plough in the US. During his tenure there, he was responsible for the marketing of Intron A, Schering-Plough's alpha-interferon.
In his last position at Schering-Plough, Jean-François directed the US Phase IV studies in all therapeutic areas, as well as the health economics, medical information, and biotechnology pre-marketing groups. As a medical doctor, Jean-François practiced emergency medicine at Necker University Hospital in Paris.
Since joining Atlas Venture, Jean-François has been involved in the formation of companies such as Archemix, ArQule (NASDAQ: ARQL), Aureon Laboratories, Cellzome, deCODE (NASDAQ: DCGN), Exelixis (NASDAQ: EXEL), MorphoSys (Neuer Markt: MORG), NxStage (NASDAQ: NXTM), Resolvyx Pharmaceuticals and SGX Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: SGXP). He was also an investor in Ciphergen Biosystems and Nuvelo (NASDAQ: NUVO).
Jean-François received his MD from Paris University School of Medicine, and his MBA from Columbia University.
Linda Grais, MD

Linda Grais, M.D., brings to InterWest Partners a wide array of experience as a physician, attorney and biotechnology entrepreneur.
Previously, Dr. Grais was a founder and executive vice president of SGX Pharmaceuticals (SGXP), a drug discovery company focusing on new treatments for cancer. Prior to that, she was a corporate attorney at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where she represented biotechnology and medical device companies in venture financings, public offerings and strategic partnerships.
Before practicing law, Dr. Grais worked as an assistant clinical professor of Internal Medicine and Critical Care at the University of California, San Francisco. She has also served as a consultant to the Institute of Medicine, and is a member of the Stanford Law School Board of Visitors.
Dr. Grais received a B.A. from Yale University, magna cum laude, and Phi Beta Kappa, an M.D. from Yale Medical School, and a J.D. from Stanford Law School.
Kyle Lefkoff

Kyle Lefkoff, 48, is a Founder and General Partner of Boulder Ventures Ltd. Boulder Ventures manages four venture capital funds with over $300 million in committed capital. In his twenty- two-year career as a venture capitalist, Mr. Lefkoff has invested in 54 Colorado companies, resulting in twelve IPOs and fourteen trade sales.
Mr. Lefkoff’s representative life science investments include Hauser Chemical Research (NASDAQ: HAUS); NeXstar Pharmaceuticals (sold to Gilead Sciences), Array BioPharma (NASDAQ: ARRY), Dharmacon (Sold to Fisher Scientific), Genomica (sold to Exelixis), ARCA Discovery, and Barofold.
Representative information technology investments include McData Corp. (sold to EMC); Atlantes (sold to Metromail); Compatible Systems Corp. (sold to Cisco Systems); and Wall Street on Demand (sold to Goldman Sachs).
Representative natural foods retailing investments include Horizon Organic Dairy (sold to Dean Foods); Alfalfa’s Markets (sold to Wild Oats); and Fresh & Wild PLC (sold to Whole Foods).
Mr. Lefkoff is a Director of ARCA biopharma, Centerstone Technologies, Metabolite Laboratories, and Trust Company of America. He is the Chairman of the Board of Array BioPharma, and of BaroFold Inc. He is the past Chairman of the Venture Capital Association of Colorado, and is an Adjunct Professor of Finance at the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business.
Mr. Lefkoff received his B.A. in Economics from Vassar College (summa cum laude) in 1981. In 1980, Mr. Lefkoff completed a Fellowship in Economic History at the London School of Economics. In 1985, he completed his MBA in Finance at the University of Chicago.
Mr. Lefkoff is an experienced alpinist, with difficult ascents to his credit in the French Alps, Peruvian Andes, and the major ranges of North America. He was a member of the 1986 American Expedition to the North Face of K2, and is a Lifetime Member and past Director of the American Mountain Guides Association. He lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife, Cindy, and their two sons.
David G. Lowe, Ph.D.
Skyline Ventures
Dr. Lowe has been involved as a research scientist, managing and leading drug discovery programs, and advising and investing in life sciences companies since 1985. He is a molecular biologist and was Director of Cardiovascular Research at Genentech, Inc., (NYSE:DNA) where he worked for 16 years.
At Genentech, Dr. Lowe led drug discovery activities in biologics and small molecule therapeutics. He was responsible for drug discovery efforts that resulted in eight drug candidates taken into clinical development, including the successful cancer therapy Avastin™. David was a member of the therapeutic area team responsible for cardiovascular strategic planning and product portfolio management, and worked extensively with Business Development on in-licensing of early and late-stage therapeutics, and technology access.
David holds a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Toronto, Canada. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is an inventor on 7 issued US patents.
John L. Zabriskie, Ph.D.
Co-Founder and Director of Puretech Ventures, LLC and Former President And Chief Executive Officer, Pharmacia and Upjohn Inc.
Dr. Zabriskie has served as a member of our Board of Directors since March 2005. Dr. Zabriskie is Co-Founder and Director of Puretech Ventures, LLC, and the past Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and President of NEN Life Science Products, Inc., a leading supplier of kits for labeling and detection of DNA.
Prior to joining NEN Life Science Products, Dr. Zabriskie was President and Chief Executive Officer of Pharmacia and Upjohn Inc. As Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Upjohn, Dr. Zabriskie led the Upjohn project, which resulted in the $12 billion merger of equals with Pharmacia.
Prior to joining Upjohn in 1994, Dr. Zabriskie was Executive Vice President for Merck & Co., Inc. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Array BioPharma, Inc., Cellicon, Inc., Harlan, Inc., Kellogg Co., MacroChem Corp., Protein Forest Inc. and Puretech Ventures.
Dr. Zabriskie received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Dartmouth College and his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Rochester.
